Environmental stewards strive to sustain natural resources and our environment by managing, overseeing, and caring for the world’s natural resources.
Process water is water that is used for non-potable, industrial applications such as cooling water and boiler feed water. Its sources are often surface waters such as lakes or rivers and sometimes groundwater. Depending on the quality of this water source, the amount of treatment required will vary.
The filter industry is in a state of confusion about rating their filters. Customers want a simple way to compare filter elements so the micron ratings system was invented. A micron rating is an arbitrary value assigned to a filter by the manufacturer, not an actual measured value. It quotes a particle size without establishing the filter’s efficiency at removing that size particle.
A ship’s bilge water is a mixture of discharges and leakage from a wide variety of sources, which drain to the lowest compartment (bilge) of a vessel. Bilge water includes seawater accumulation, normal water leakage from machinery, and wash downs. It can also contain a variety of constituents such as solids, cleaning agents, solvents, fuel, lubrication oil, and hydraulic oil.
When two liquids are immiscible, or not soluble in each other, they can form an emulsion or a colloidal suspension. In these types of mixtures the dispersed liquid (water) forms droplets in the continuous phase (oil or fuel). For instance, in a water-diesel fuel mixture the diesel fuel is the continuous phase and the water will exist as droplets of various sizes.
The function of transformer oil is insulation and cooling of transformers. A transformer consists of metal, oil, and cardboard insulation. The oil is actually insulating oil and is used not only in transformers, but also in circuit breakers, capacitors, bushings, and tap changers. Insulating oil is a refined mineral oil obtained from fractional distillation of crude oil. It is free of moisture, inorganic acids, alkali, sulfur, asphalt, tar, and vegetable or animal oils.

Tap changers are a vital element in regulating power flow within transformers, containing insulating oil that must be constantly maintained for maximum dielectric strength. The oil can become compromised whenever there are contaminants such as carbon, water, and metallic particles present, leading to costly repair downtime or worse, complete destruction of the transformer.
Oil can contain a certain amount of moisture. The maximum amount of moisture that oil can contain in solution is called its saturation point. Once the oil has reached its saturation point, any additional water that is added will separate out as free water, which then forms a distinct layer underneath the oil.
We do not really know how long oil can be purified and reused.
In the sixty-year history of manufacturing oil purification equipment, Allen Filters, Inc. has yet to experience a situation where, with routine and thorough purification with our equipment the oil could not be re-used for a very long time.
In early 1995, a new compressor for processing light hydrocarbons was brought online for the liquefaction of these products. The lube oil system was charged with expensive synthetic oil. From the first startup, it was found that the liquefied gas was leaking into the lube oil. The gas was becoming entrained in the oil diluting it, lowering its flash point and viscosity, and reducing the lubricatingcapability to unacceptable levels.
Phosphate esters are polar fluids with excellent lubricating properties that can operate under extreme conditions such as electro-hydraulic compounds for steam and gas turbines, aircraft carriers, as well as steel mills and foundries. However, phosphate esters require strict control in order to extend their useful lifespan.
